From the moment you arrive on the Mendes Ranch, the feeling of ohana (family) is abundant and the views are astounding. A family owned and operated business, the original Mendes traveled to the island of Maui from the Azores Island, Portugal in 1886. The land where the ranch is now located was a homestead in the 1940's by Manuel Mendes, otherwise known as "Red", and his only son Ernest Mendes.
It was rough during those times- no electricity, no running water, dirt roads over rocky terrain. They stuck it out...now, Ernest's son Allan J. Mendes runs the ranch. You'll recognize Mendes Ranch cattle by their EX brand! The EM brand (for Ernest Mendes) was already taken, so the Mendes family used EX. There were many cattle rustlers back then and the "X" could not be covered up by another brand.
The breathtaking trail ride across an actual working ranch will be a journey that we will never be forgotten!
